The Firefly Sisterhood Connects Breast Cancer Survivors

The Firefly Sisterhood is a recently formed nonprofit organization that fosters one-to-one connections between breast cancer survivors and those newly diagnosed with breast cancer. These personal connections between someone who has been through surgery and treatment for breast cancer with someone who is newly diagnosed help to make the breast cancer journey less daunting.

The Firefly Sisterhood matches Guide Sisters, women who have experienced diagnosis and treatment and are willing to offer their support to another person, with a newly diagnosed person. The goal is to connect women with similar life circumstances. For example, if a newly diagnosed woman lives in Minneapolis and has young children, the goal is to match her with a Guide Sister who lives in Minneapolis and has young children.

When a match is created, both women will be given each other's contact details so they can connect via phone, text, or email. Once matched, Firefly Sisters are free to explore their relationship at their own discretion. The relationship may result in one reassuring phone call or it could become an ongoing, enduring friendship.

Guide Sisters are required to go through a short orientation before being matched. During the orientation, trainers experienced in emotional mentorship help the Guide Sisters to learn about empathic listening and insightful questioning. It is very important that the Guide Sisters understand, and are prepared for, the realities of helping another through breast cancer.
